My role: Director

Jana Koelmel’s video, Something to Do with My Father (2014), is an immersive installation using three screens. A whirling dancing girl turns alone in a dusty pool; wind pulls and feeds a tower of flame; bodies of water surround and rock a small raft upon which two people stand; the forest throbs. The hypnotic sound is a combination of spoken narrative and an internal hum of memory; the storyline flows from screen to screen with the fluidity of water. One senses a wealth of metaphors, an internal dreamscape and a tender analysis of another time.

Jana Koelmel worked with contemporary dancer, and choreographer Lauren Bridle, in order to create a dance for camera, where two dancers translate the inner landscapes of the text into movement. The filming was set in two main locations in London: Alexandra and Ainsworth Estate, a brutalist council housing estate, and a wooden raft floating in the middle of a lake. The video involves music compositions by Alberto Santamaría Lázaro, and a voice over by Aischa-Lina Loebbert. Camera work: Michael Angelov & Jacob Robinson.
